The quickest way to do this is to go to Google and Yahoo and type the keyword into the search engine.  When the results come back for the keyphrase you will see how many results their are.  This number will be a very quick test to see how competitive the word is.  To fully analyze the competitiveness of your keyword, more research will be necessary.

The goal of research is to help you determine which three words you want to go after on 1 specific webpage.  If you determine that your selected keywords are all highly competitive, it may be best to split them up between different webpages.  To get good rankings for a highly competetive word you may want to focus exclusively on that one word, and then lightly go after the second or thrid keyphrase.
